  Identity of sitter was provided by donor, Mrs D. J. D. Litchfield, a Wiseman family descendant cf. PXn 879 (information from Mrs Litchfield) - donor stated that the telescope depicted in portrait is still in Wiseman family hands. In his Reminiscences of Thirty Years Residence in Mew South Wales and Victoria (1863), Roger Therry notes regarding Solomon Wiseman that "I saw him often ... but never without a telescope in hand, with which he kept a look-out for travellers as they descended a mountain pass on the opposite side of the river to his house" (p. 121)
  It has not proved possible to positively identify subject of portrait; nor the artist. The style of painting does not accord with any known portrait painter working in Australia before 1838.
  Donor stated that portrait was restored in ca. 1980 by a State Library of NSW officer
  Frame is a late eighteenth century ebony frame, with pressed metal decorative corner pieces.
