Pat Woolley, publisher, was born in Los Angeles in 1947 and moved to Australia in 1970. In 1971, in Melbourne, she co-produced the Montsalvat Renaissance Fair, edited early issues of High Times and started an underground printing business called Tomato Press which she moved to Sydney the following year. In 1973 she went to England where she worked as a freelance typesetter for such publications as Oz Magazine, Private Eye and Time Out. Back in Sydney in 1974 she co-founded, with academic and author Michael Wilding, the Wild & Woolley publishing company. Wild & Woolley ran its own distribution business, AllBooks, and were agents for overseas presses. During the 1970s Woolley promoted new Australian books and writers for the Literature Board under the title Books Australia; served as Managing Editor of Tabloid Story magazine, 1974-1977; and was Vice-President of the Australian Independent Publishers Association, 1976-1978. In 1983 she co-founded Women’s Redress Press, a non-profit publishing company for producing books of interest to women. In 1986 she established Australia in Print, a company to market and distribute Australian books in America, which folded in 1990. The next year Woolley set up FastBooks, a company to provide a desktop publishing service for authors who wish to produce a small print run of their own books. She graduated Bachelor of Laws from the University of New South Wales in 1991. In 1994 she was involved in setting up Publish Australia, ‘a national enterprise network of independent Australian publishers’.
