    In 1829, William Grant Broughton travelled from England to Australia with his wife Sarah (`Sally') and two daughters Emily and Phoebe, to succeed Thomas Hobbes Scott as Archdeacon of New South Wales. Broughton visited Hobart (Tas.) in 1830 to sit on a committee appointed by Lieutenant Governor George Arthur to consider Aboriginal matters. In 1836, Broughton became Bishop of Australia and was enthroned in St James' Church, Sydney. Mrs Sarah Broughton died in 1849.

    1830-1883; Correspondence mainly of Bishop William Grant Broughton, being three letters to Sarah (`Sally') Broughton sent from Hobart (Tas.) in Mar. 1830 and letters of sympathy received on the death of his wife from Anna M. Nixon, Elizabeth Gipps and J. F. Francis, 1850; letter from Emily A. F. Broughton to her sister Phoebe, wife of William Barker Boydell, 13 Aug. 184-?; two letters from Sarah P. Doyle to her brother John Francis ('Jack') Boydell, 28 July 1883, the second letter lacking first page and date.
