Clayton Joyce (1950- ) was born at Thargomindah in Western Queensland, the son of a cattle drover. He has held a number of positions within local government and the Commonwealth Public Service, as well as in private industry. Joyce is deeply affected by art and literature. His affection for the works of Patrick White led him to plan a tribute to White from contributions of well known Australians. White died while Joyce was still compiling the tribute, which was published by Collins Angus & Robertson in 1991 on the first anniversary of White's death.
