  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Henry Stiles, Evangelical missionary and parish clergyman, was born in England. Ordained as a deacon and priest in 1832, he was appointed Master of the Female Orphan School, Parramatta. Stiles did not formerly take up this post as he received a permanent appointment as Minister of St. Matthew, Windsor, from 1833 remaining until 1866. Stiles was a close friend of Reverend Samuel Marsden, and later became an adherent of the Oxford Movement or Tractarian tradition (theological and liturgical revival of the Catholic tradition within Anglicanism) -- Reference: Australian Dictionary of Biography.     1832-1834, 1836-1840, 1842-1843, 1847-1849, 1852, 1855; Correspondence on religious and financial matters, certificates and licences. Includes award of Holy Orders, 1832; letters confirming appointment at Female Orphan, and service at Windsor and Richmond; letters from Alexander Macleay and Charles Cowper regarding payment of clergyman's salaries; John Kinchela sanctions Stiles receipt of the parsonage house and premises from Joseph Docker; Samuel Marsden invites Stiles to minister on Norfolk Island; Bishop W.G. Broughton [signed "W.E. Australia"] comments on interracial marriages, schooling, and religious matters; complaints about the races held near Windsor; religious disputes; and general letters of thanks.
