  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    William Branwhite Clarke (1798-1878) was born in East Bergholt, Suffolk, England to William Clarke and Sarah nee Branwhite. He became well known as an Anglican clergyman and geologist in New South Wales. In 1841 he discovered gold in the Blue Mountains, he also carried out significant work collecting and documenting fossil and mineral deposits in New South Wales. He married Maria Moreton nee Stather in 1832, they had 1 son (Mordaunt William Shipley Clarke 1833 - ca. 1919) and 3 daughters, the last of whom was born in New South Wales. The family moved to New South Wales in 1839 when the Rev. Clarke accepted an offer by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel of a chaplaincy in New South Wales. Maria and the children moved to Ireland in 1842 where Mordaunt was educated and returned to New South Wales in 1856. In 1869 Mordaunt married Georgina Alice nee Mann (1840-1938), their son, William Branthwaite Clarke was born in 1871.
  • Scope and Content
    The collection includes:

    1. A small leather bag (possibly used for gold specimens)
    2-3. Two albumen stereographic views of St. Thomas's Church, North Sydney
    4. A stereographic view of Milson's Point, North Sydney
    5. An interior view of East Bergholt Church, Suffolk, dated 1874
    6. A small pencil drawing of the birthplace of Rev. W. B. Clarke at East Berholt, dated 1831
    7.-43. A group of 37 cartes de visite. Some of the cartes de visite are identified on the verso with dates. They are presumably family and friends of the Clarke Family. Cartes de visite by various photographic companies and studios in Sydney, England and the United States of America. Portrait subjects are adults and children, depicted in busts, half and full length, sitting and standing.
