    LR plan #11
"Merlin arrived in the town on Christmas Eve, 1872, when 'the place was all alive and aglow'. Next morning 'everything was still and in oppressive contrast with the excitement of the previous evening'. The dusty streets were deserted. 'Everybody had gone away, some to visit country friends, others on picnic excursions, and, I presume, some to church. It was singular with what unanimity the majority of the people had deserted the town.' Merlin had, however, 'a good opportunity of noticing its cheerful position and growing importance'. -- Australian Town and Country Journal, 5 July 1873
