The competition was held to mark the `175th anniversary of the founding of Australia'. The National Trust (N.S.W.) organised the competition in co-operation with the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (N.S.W. chapter) and it was sponsered by the Sydney Morning Herald. [The aim of the competition was] to encourage in Australia a proper pride in and appreciation of the fine buildings erected by our pioneers.

Each entry was to be accompanied by a photograph of the building. The competition had five categories:
Class 1: The best restoration or renovation of a town or country house, to be carried out between the opening of the competition and its close.
Class 2: The best preserved or restored town or country house.
Class 3: The best preserved or restored complete terrace of more than one attached house.
Class 4: The best maintained or restored public building (Commonwealth, State or local government building).
Class 5: The best maintained or restored building which is privately owned but open to the public (such as churches, hotels, clubs, stores and private schools).

A copy of an entry form, list of prize winners and 2 spiral notebooks recording each entry are held in Box 1.
