  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Albert William Arlom (d. 1938), an accomplished solo flautist, and his family emigrated from England to Australia in 1908. He had married Elisa Tinkler Watson in 1886 in Sunderland. The family settled briefly in Adelaide, where Albert and his son Wilfred (1887-1945), a flautist and organist, regularly performed together. Wilfred became assistant conductor and accompanist of the Adelaide Orpheus Society. By 1916 the Arloms had moved to Sydney where father and son became prominent figures in chamber music circles. Both performed in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and were flautists with the Royal Philharmonic Society of Sydney. Albert W. Arlom was appointed Professor of Flute and Piccolo at the NSW State Conservatorium of Music. He was aided by Wilfred as Assistant Professor, who was later appointed Professor of Organ and an examiner of the Australian Music Examinations Board. At various times, Wilfred also held the positions of organist at Woollahra Presbyterian Church and Killara Congregational Church. Wilfred Arlom married Gladys Thelma Deutscher in 1922. They had two children, Mary and John. The Arlom family home, Wyvern, at Roseville, became the venue for fundraising musicales hosted by Thelma Arlom, a piano teacher.
