    E.J. Brady was born in Carcoar, NSW in 1869. He travelled widely in Australia and worked as a journalist and editor. He is best known for his poetry especially his sea ballads. He also wrote travel books, short stories, children's books and an autobiography, Life's highway (1952-55). He died in 1952.
    Louis Esson was born in Scotland in 1878 and came to Australia as a child. For most of his life he was a free-lance journalist. He was a playwright of distinction and as well as plays he published stories and poems. He died in 1943.
