  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Robert Bruce Jamieson, boatbuilder and charter boat captain, was a pioneer in the development of Hayman Island (Qld.) as a popular tourist destination. Born at South West Rocks (N.S.W.) in 1903, he took an early interest in sailing and speed boat racing on the Macleay River. He worked in the family sawmill at Frederickton (N.S.W.), where he acquired skills in boatbuilding. He built the diesel launch Cheerio which operated as a passenger and charter boat around the Cumberland and Whitsunday Islands (Qld.) throughout the 1930s. Cheerio was also chartered by Queensland's Forestry Department for survey trips and the state's National Parks Service for trips between Townsville and the Torres Straits. During the war the vessel was requisitioned for harbour protection. The family business also contributed to the war effort by producing timber for army hutments, barge constructions, wharf girders and decking.
