  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    George Russell Drysdale, painter of the Australian outback, was born at Bognor Regis, England, in 1912. His family settled permanently in Australia in 1923 and he went as a boarder to Geelong Grammar School. He first studied art at the George Bell school in Melbourne, then later in London and Paris. In 1935 he married Elizabeth 'Bon' Stephen; in 1938 his daughter Lynne was born; in 1940 he moved to Sydney with his family.
    Drysdale, often referred to as Tas or Tassie, travelled extensively, both overseas and in Australia. He maintained an active role as a company director in the family enterprise, Pioneer Sugar Mills in North Queensland. He was appointed a member of the Commonwealth Art Advisory Board in 1962 and a trustee of the Art Gallery of NSW in 1963. In 1969 he was knighted and appointed Companion of the Order of Australia in 1980. He died in June 1981 survived by his second wife Maisie and daughter. Drysdale is represented in the Tate Gallery, London, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and all major Australian galleries. His long and distinguished career has been documented in books, films and television programs.
