    Jack Fingleton was born in Sydney in 1908. He was educated at Waverley Christian Brothers College and played cricket for Waverley Club. A right hand opening batsman, he played 18 tests for Australia from 1932 to 1938, scoring five centuries. In 1942 he married Phillipa Street, daughter of Sir Kenneth Street, Chief Justice of NSW. As a journalist he wrote articles on cricket and politics (he was a member of the Canberra Press Gallery) for Australian and overseas papers and magazines. He was also a popular and respected radio commentator on the game. His cricket books include Cricket crisis (1946), Brightly fades the Don (1949) and The ashes crown the year (1954). In 1976 he was awarded an OBE for services to sport and journalism. He died in 1981.
