  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The Rainbow Archives project was initiated by Pip Wilson, former editor of Simply Living magazine, as a means of preserving the culture of the alternative movement which emerged in the 1960s and continues to flourish in the 1990s. The collection was begun in 1985 and encompasses material from a wide range of sources documenting a variety of interconnected movements including counter culture, rural resettlement, communal living, permaculture, natural healing, conservation of the environment, new age, nuclear disarmament, peace, alternative religions, personal development, arts and crafts.

    Correspondence with Bill Ethell, captain of the 18 metre ketch, Pacific Peacemaker, which he sailed to Mururoa Atoll in 1981 to protest against the French atomic tests and subsequently to Seattle, USA in an attempt to blockade the first Trident nuclear submarine. This collection covers events prior to the voyage to Seattle in 1982, Bill Ethell's return and his work in trade unions in Western Australia and NSW. Also includes photocopy of his diary and the beginning of a book about the voyage, correspondence with other people on the voyage and related material. "Basically it is a correspondence between two left wing peace/trade union activists in the 1980s - also both parents of a little girl, Alice, born while Pacific Peacemaker was on its voyage."
