    George Collingridge was born in England in 1847, migrating to Australia in 1879. He became an illustrator for the Illustrated Sydney News and together with his brother, Arthur, founded the (Royal) Art Society of NSW in July 1880. He contributed articles to many publications, mainly concerning early voyages of discovery especially relating to Australia. He became obsessed with proving Portuguese priority in this regard and published his major work, The discovery of Australia, in 1895. He died in 1931.

    26 May 1929; Autograph letter, signed, in which Collingridge gives an account of his visit to Sir Henry Parkes in 1880 and the consequent founding of the Art Society of NSW.
