  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Charles Venour Nathan was the great great grandson of the composer Isaac Nathan. He was an enthusiastic amateur naturalist and genealogist/historian.
Isaac Nathan (1792-1864) emigrated from England to Australia in 1841. For the next twenty years he dominated the Australian musical scene as a composer, teacher, organist and conductor. His opera Don John of Austria, which he composed in 1846, is believed to be the first opera written and performed in Australia.
Charles Nathan (1816-1872) was the eldest child of Isaac Nathan and his first wife, Rosetta, nee Worthington. Although he ran away from home at the age of thirteen and studied to become a surgeon, he joined his family in migrating to Sydney in 1841. In Sydney, he started a successful medical practice in Elizabeth Street and in 1845 he was one of the original four doctors appointed to the new Sydney Infirmary and Dispensary.
