    Phillip Parker King was born in 1791, the son of Philip Gidley King, 3rd governor of NSW. He entered the navy in 1807 and was promoted lieutenant in 1814. From 1817 to 1821 he conducted a survey of the Australian coast. By 1824 he was considered to be one of Britain's leading hydrographers and in that year was made a fellow of the Royal society. In 1825 he was given command of HMS Adventure with orders to chart the coasts of Peru, Chile and Patagonia. This was not completed until 1830 by which time he had been promoted to captain. He settled in NSW and in 1855 was promoted rear-admiral on the retired list. He died in 1856.

    1826-1829; Journal of H.M. Surveying Vessel Adventure by Capt. Phillip P. King. 30 April 1826-29 August 1829. Contains standard journal/log entries as required by the Admiralty as well as detailed technical information on sailing directions, the rating of chronometers, observations of magnetic intensity, tidal observations, astronomical observations etc.
    1825; An account of experiments to determine the figure of the earth ... by Edward Sabine. King's own copy which has been annotated by him.
    1832; The Royal Society 1831-2. Fellows of the Society. King's own copy which has been annotated by him to record the deaths of members.
    1847; The new navy list by Joseph Allen. King's own copy annotated by him to record the deaths of senior officers ("dd" = discharged dead) as he gradually climbed the ladder of promotion.
