  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Maggie Tabberer, AM, award winning model, and Australian fashion, publishing and media personality. Born Margaret May Trigar, 11 December 1936 in Adelaide, and later known as ‘Maggie T’, Maggie Tabberer took her surname from her first husband, Charles Tabberer, whom she married at the age of 17, and with whom she had two daughters: Brooke and Amanda. In her early twenties, Maggie attended a modelling school and was discovered by photographer Helmut Newton. She won ‘Model of the Year’ in 1960 but ended her modelling career early at the age of 25. Tabberer began working in publishing writing a fashion column, “Maggie Says” for Sydney’s Daily Mirror newspaper in 1963. In 1967, Maggie Tabberer started the public relations company 'Maggie Tabberer & Associates' and launched a plus-size clothing label called "Maggie T" in 1981. Tabberer was invited by Kerry Packer to become fashion editor of Australia Women’s Weekly magazine in 1981. Maggie Tabberer also maintained a long career in television, beginning in 1964 on the panel talk show ‘Beauty and the Beast’, and her own chat show ‘Maggie’ for which she won two consecutive Gold Logie awards in 1970 and 1971. Tabberers television career included regular appearances on talk and lifestyle shows through the 1980’s and 1990’s, including 'Mike Walsh show', 'Midday', 'Good Morning show', and 'Good Morning Australia'. 'The Home Show' co-hosted with Richard Zachariah aired on the ABC from 1990 to 1995, and Maggie Tabberer has hosted her own television interview show ‘Maggie… At Home With’ since 2005.
Maggie Tabberers varied high profile career and celebrity included the public journey of her own personal life. Separating from her first husband in 1960, Tabberer moved to Sydney with her daughters and married Italian restaurateur, Ettore Prossimo in 1967. The pair separated after 17 years of marriage and in 1985, Tabberer announced she was in a relationship with journalist Richard Zachariah, which lasted to 1995.
In the 1998 Queen’s Birthday Honours, Maggie Tabberer was made a Member of the Order of Australia, for service to the community, support for charitable organisations and the advancement of the Australian fashion industry.
