  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Philip Gidley King (1758-1808) sailed to Australia on the First Fleet. He was appointed lieutenant-governor of Norfolk Island in 1790 and was governor of New South Wales from 1800 to 1806.
    Phillip Parker King (1793-1856) was the son of Philip Gidley King. He joined the navy in 1807. From 1817 to 1822 he conducted a survey of the Australian coast in the cutter Mermaid. In 1826 he sailed in command of HMS Adventure in company with HMS Beagle to survey the southern coast of South America. He settled in Sydney and in 1855 attained the rank of rear-admiral.
