The Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hearing Impaired Group was launched from the ideas of Mary Sparke, with a public meeting at Hornsby Shire Council Chambers on 10 March, 1981. The group aimed to provide a rehabilitation program to meet the needs of people who have acquired a hearing loss after the development of speech and language.

In 1982 the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hearing Impaired Group organised an Australian tour by the American founder of Shhh (Self Help for Hard of Hearing People), Howard "Rocky" Stone. Following the tour, Rocky organised a foundation meeting of Shhh in November of 1982, with Mary Sparke the first President.
