  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Morrison was educated at Geelong College, Victoria where his father George Morrison was headmaster. This medal was presented to fourteen year old George Ernest Morrison in 1876 for coming first in the Scripture History examination. It was specially purchased and presented by Hugh McVean (sometimes spelt MacVean) Esq. of Strathveen-Cressy who was a local cattle farmer, horse breeder, trustee for the Presbyterian Church for land in Cressy, and donor to the local hospital.

  • Scope and Content
    1 gold medal, 5.4 cm in diameter, with blue ribbon:
    Obverse : the legend 'Presented / By / Hugh McVean Esq. / Strathvean' above an open book
    Reverse : the legend 'First Prize for Scripture / George E. Morrison / Geelong College'
    This gold medal, handcrafted and engraved by an unknown maker, consists of a round disc surrounded by a chased gold Scottish thistle and oak leaf wreath. A ring is set within the disc and linked with another ring to provide the means for the ribbon to be attached to the medal. It is designed to be hung around the neck using a royal blue ribbon, of which only a remnant remains.
