  • General note

Accompanying each illustration is a page of descriptive text that is handwritten in ink. The etchings are titled by J.W. Lewin using the common form of the name of the moth illustrated.
The volume was compiled in New South Wales most likely as a pattern book for the London edition.

These etchings were used in the published version of, "Prodromus entomology. Natural history of lepidopterous insects of New South Wales / collected, engraved, and faithfully painted after nature by John William Lewin." London, 1805 (DSM/ Q595.78/ L).
Pencil notes by the botanist Sir James Edward Smith (1759-1828) and Alexander Macleay (1767-1848) give varying scientific names. -- taken from old Mitchell Library card catalogue, subsequently discarded Feb. 2005

Some of the text is difficult to read.

The presence of William Sharp Macleay's signature indicates that the volume was in his possession.
