John Campbell was born in 1855 in Scotland and may also be the artist known as J. T. Campbell. He emigrated to Australia sometime prior to 1875 and travelled extensively, working as a scenic painter and decorator in Parramatta, Brisbane, Perth and Tasmania. He painted both landscapes and buildings and was known for capturing very fine architectural detail. In around 1900, he settled in Perth and later died there in 1924, possibly on 1 May.

Listed as "Historic House Parramatta" at auction by Lawson's, 15 February 2024. Then passed to vendor.

1 watercolour and ink work on paper of Greenwich House (originally called Willoughby House) at 21 George Street, Greenwich, Sydney, painted by John Campbell in 1892. The work shows the western aspect of the house, from the driveway, with a small garden. Part of a neighbouring property can be seen on the left side.
