- Scope and ContentIn this interview Pia O’Donnell discusses her experience as the first congenitally deaf child in Australia to receive a cochlear implant, and the moment as a child aged four that she first told her parents she wanted the implant. Pia discusses her early life, adjusting to the cochlear implant, her explanation of how it works, speech therapy, her experiences at school as a deaf student, and learning Auslan after high school. Pia also reflects on her young son who also has a cochlear implant, and the difference she notices with his schooling experience and support. Pia discusses her university studies and completing a Bachelor of Science, working for the NSW Rural Fire Service, her current role mapping bushfires with satellite imagery and the immense work involved after the 2019-2020 bushfires.
