  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Murdoch McLeod (1856-1946) was born in Scotland and ran away from home as a teenager. After an eventful career at sea and managing a flour mill in Queensland, McLeod purchased a partnership in the Thomas Quirk and Co. flour mill in Wellington in 1898. Upon the sale of Thomas Quirk's interest in 1902 to Gillespie Brothers, Murdoch embarked upon the construction of a new mill in Warne Street, Wellington near the railway line, with a siding, sheds and his residence, ‘Logiealmond’. The M. McLeod and Co. Great Western Flour Mill was opened on 8 February 1905. It was the most modern flour mill in New South Wales at that time, with the capacity to mill 400,000 bushels of wheat a year. As Managing Director of the Gillespie Company, Murdoch McLeod managed their four Western Mills in New South Wales, which included the M. McLeod Limited, Wellington Flour Mill. He continued to personally manage the flour mill in Wellington until his retirement in 1934, the business M. McLeod Limited passing to his son, Don. The M. McLeod Pty. Ltd, Wellington Flour Mill closed in 1968.
