  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Samuel Camfield Baker inherited the photographic business of his father, James Baker, at 128 William Street, Paddington, Sydney from 1864, teaching photography and producing works through his studio, Baker's School of Photography. Later, he travelled and worked as a photographer through the goldfields region of rural New South Wales: at Young and Murrumburrah in 1869, at Gulgong between 1872 and 1873, and at Forbes between 1883 and 1884. In 1872 in Wellington, New South Wales, he married Edith Whittle. By 1894, he had filed for bankruptcy on the Paddington studio after a fire destroyed the accounting records and his business partner absconded.
