  • General note

Ross Edwards composed MBOC in response to a commission from the Austral String Quartet while he was living in a remote Yorkshire farmhouse in 1972. The Austral Quartet (Donald Hazelwood, Ronald Ryder, Ronald Cragg and Gregory Elmaloglou) were very supportive of Edwards' early work. Their recordings of MBOC, as well as String Quartets 1 and 2, were issued on an ABC LP disc, or discs, intended for broadcast but not commercial release. All three quartets were later withdrawn by Edwards as juvenilia. MBOC was toured by the Austral String Quartet and performed, possibly for the first time, in the Purcell Room, London, in 1972. MBOC is in the form of a mobile whose score is printed on a single page.
