Walter Roots was one of the founding members of the Sydney Bush Walkers (SBW). Walter and Phyllis Roots were both keen and active participants in SBW, holding various committee positions. The family moved interstate in 1935, receiving the photograph album of many SBW members. They returned to Sydney early in the 1940s and continued with Sydney Bush Walkers.

The Sydney Bush Walkers (SBW) was founded in 1927 and is one of the oldest bushwalking clubs in NSW. The club held regular meetings and its activities included organised bushwalks, annual reunions, publication of 'The Sydney Bushwalker', as well as social functions and concerts.

From 1952 to 1958 members of the SBW club called themselves the Crown Street Composers and presented SBW campfire audiences with a series of performances that became known as 'The Chronic Operas'.
