  • Scope and Content
Oral history interview with former staff and residents, conducted by Sue Andersen and Laila Ellmoos and transcribed by Susie Nelson-Smith. Val Forbes, a former nurse at the Stockton Centre, and Denise Leask, Betty Miller, Lola O'Doherty and Beryl Frost, former residents, talk about: their experiences at the Stockton Centre and in the time since they left; the residents' work in the sewing room and looking after the younger children; moving into the community; Betty's engagement; Beryl learning to write; getting the pension; and going to the dentist.

In the final part of the session, Val Forbes is interviewed separately and talks about: starting work at the Stockton Centre as a wardsmaid; training as a nurse; preparing residents for life in the community; acquiring community housing; workshops for the residents; the use of restraints; and her work as a welfare officer.
