  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Daniel Cooper (1785-1853) and Solomon Levey (1794-1833) both came to Sydney as convicts but soon developed a variety of business interests which made them spectacularly wealthy. In June 1825 they joined forces and the firm Cooper & Levey was formed. As inporters, exporters, woolbuyers, store and ship owners, shipbuilders, shipping agents, whalers and sealers, they had a large share of the colony's business. In 1826 they acquired 100 acres at Woolahra and Rose Bay, and they owned, by grant or purchase, most of the land in Waterloo, Alexandria, Redfern, Randwick, and Neutral Bay. In 1826 Levey left for England and Cooper followed in 1831 but neither gave up his business interests in Sydney.
