    John Russell Stewart Thompson (1934-), known as Stewart, was born in Hornsby, New South Wales and attended Hurlstone Agricultural College, Sydney. After completing a plumbing apprenticeship, Stewart joined the Army Reserve and in 1955, became a mounted police officer. He later returned to the Army when he enlisted as an Australian Army officer for the Royal Papuan New Guinea Constabulary. Stewart retired from the Army in 1977 and established an equestrian farm near Richmond, New South Wales.

    Louise Darmody is a journalist, oral historian and producer.
