  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Samuel Terry was born ca. 1776. While working as a labourer in Manchester he was convicted of theft and sentenced to seven years transportation, arriving in Sydney in 1801. Terry prospered rapidly through speculation, pastoral properties and trade and accumulated properties on the Nepean River, Illawarra and Bathurst, eventually becoming the richest man in the colony. He was also active in the colony’s political life and a leading philanthropist. Terry died in 1838 leaving a personal estate of £250,000, and an income of over £10,000 a year

    Francis James Peisley was born in Parramatta, New South Wales in 1803, the son of John Peisley a convict. He died in Penrith, New South Wales in 1859.
