  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Robert Amos Cairns Baird (b. Redfern 10 July 1899; d. Sutherland 30 April 1984) was a confectioner at ‘Sweetacres’ - a New South Wales company of James Stedman Henderson Sweets Ltd., which opened on Rothschild Avenue in Rosebery in 1918.

James Stedman (1840-1913) was a confectionery manufacturer. In 1875 Stedman bought a Sydney confectionery business and in March 1900 James Stedman Ltd was incorporated. By 1903 popular lines included peppermints, brandy balls and bull's eyes, and Stedman's Imperial Steam Confectionery Works had about 130 staff. His 'Lion' brand sweets—among them 'Butter Scotch', 'Tofflets' and 'Lankee-Bill Toff-E'—were awarded a silver medal and diploma at the 1908 Franco-British Exhibition in London.

James Stedman-Henderson's Sweets Ltd was registered as a public company in June 1920, with Stedman's eldest son James Noble (1860-1944) as chairman. The company moved from the city to Rosebery in 1918 and the premises were named ‘Sweetacres’.

In 1968, Stedman-Henderson was taken over by Hoadleys, which was acquired in 1971 by Rowntree's which was taken over globally by Nestlé in 1981.

Rowntree's confectionary company was established in York, England in 1862. The Australian branch opened on 14 March 1927.
