Colin Bisset is a Sydney based freelance writer who has studied art history, specialising in 20th century architecture and design. Colin is also a radio producer and presenter and has worked on a number of projects for ABC Radio National. He is currently working on Blueprint for Living, a series about icons of design, including architects and designers. Given his background and experience, the State Library of New South Wales approached Bisset in 2018 to conduct this oral history interview.

Richard Leplastrier (1939-) is an award-winning Sydney-based architect who was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2011 for his services to architecture and promotion of environmentally sustainable design. His awards include: the Royal Australian Institute of Architects ‘Special Jury Award’ in 1996; the Royal Australian Institute of Architects gold medal in 1999 and the Spirit of Nature and Wood architectural Award in 2004 which resulted in a publication.

Born in Melbourne, Leprastrier, with encouragement from architect John Andrews, chose to study architecture at the University of Sydney. After graduating in 1963, he worked with Jorn Utzon on the Sydney Opera House and his planned house at Bayview. In the 1960s he moved to Japan where he worked with Toyama Masuda and Kenzo Tange and learnt about Japanese philosophy and minimalism. In 1971 he set up his own architectural practice in Sydney, preferring to work for himself rather than large firms.
