Shirley Sinclair (née McLellan) was born in 1934 in Mosman, New South Wales, and grew up in nearby Seaforth. She attended secretarial school, working in the city and Mosman before travelling in the United Kingdom in 1955. In 1957 she married Peter Sinclair, a Royal Australian Navy serviceman, supporting him during his 41 year career in the navy, where he rose to the rank of Rear Admiral, and raising their three children.
