    Linda Hurley (née McMartin) was born in Sydney in 1954. She attended Kingsgrove High School and completed teacher training at Riverina College of Advanced Education, followed by secretarial studies and courses in music and pastoral education. She taught in both the public and private school systems until her retirement in 2011. She married David Hurley in 1977, accompanying him on his postings with the Australian Army, both in Australia and overseas, including as the Chief of the Defence Force, and during his appointment as the 38th Governor of New South Wales, commencing in October 2014.

    Linda Hurley talks about her childhood in Hurstville; her studies in Wagga Wagga and Canberra, and her love of country life; the independence of military wives; moving into Government House as the first incumbents since 1996; life at Government House, the private quarters, renovations and management of the household; the importance of governors' wives having their own path; her singing, patronage of different organisations and her interest in environmental issues; her regret for the loss of knowlege about Government House during the decades when the governor lived elsewhere; the importance of building bridges with Aboriginal communities; significant visitors to Government House; the impact of her role and the honour of living in Government House.
