  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Sungravure Limited was registered as a company on 26 August 1949 as the magazine publishing and printing subsidiary of Associated Newspapers Limited. At the first Board meeting on 9 September 1949 Mr R.D. Field reported that the company had purchased a property at Empire Die and Tool Works Pty Ltd. The sale of the building was completed by 21 September 1949 and on 5 October 1949 the company gained permission from the Council of the City of Sydney to use the premises for photographic processing and photogravure cylinder preparation.

In May 1954 Sungravure purchased premises in Queen, Dunning, Morley and Mentmore avenues, Rosebery occupied by the Sydney Morning Herald as a paper store and Mentmore Colour Productions Pty Ltd . Initially Sungravure published book titles (Cookery Books, atlases, encyclopaedias) but from 26 September 1955 it acquired the magazine publishing responsibilities of Associated Newspapers. Initially the magazines were 'World's News', 'Woman', 'Pocket Book', 'Pix' and 'People'
The Company was reconstituted as Sungravure Pty Limited on 24 May, 1960.
International Publishing Corporation Ltd (IPC) acquired a half interest in Sungravure in December 1969 but sold this to Sungravure Holdings Pty Ltd in 1975. John Fairfax acquired full ownership of the company in 1978.
Following the closure of the Rosebery plant in June 1981 Sungravure ceased being the printer as well as the publisher. The Company was re-named Magazine Promotions Australia Pty Ltd late in 1981. At a meeting on 10 June 1982 the company was re-named Magazine Properties Pty Limited. However the Directors appeared to meet both as Magazine Promotions Pty Limited and as Magazine Properties Pty Limited until 13 August 1992.

The companies ceased trading operations in 1992 and were wound up following an extraordinary general meeting on 2 September 1992. John R. Gibbons acted as liquidator. Magazine Properties Pty Limited was deregistered on 5 June 1993
