  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Norman Freehill, journalist and founding member of the Communist Party of Australia, met Dymphna Cusack in 1928. Although he was married they began a life-long relationship. During the 1950s and 1960s they spent long periods travelling together overseas. After marrying in 1962 (by then Freehill was a widower) they returned to Australia where they both continued to write. In 1975 Freehill published a biographical travelogue, 'Dymphna Cusack', based on years of taped dialogues which they recorded as they travelled. Cusack died in 1981 followed three years later by Freehill.
  • Collection history
The papers were passed to the donor in the 1970s by James McGrath of Mosman, the adoptive/foster son of Dymphna Cusack. The donor was a close friend of McGrath who had passed some of the donor’s early verse to Dymphna Cusack for her assessment.
