    Michael Scott-Mitchell is one of Australia’s leading set designers and a prolific artist working across theatre, opera, dance, film, television, events and exhibition design within Australia and internationally. He is currently Deputy Director/Deputy CEO/Head of Design for Performance of the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). He has worked with Australia’s leading performing arts organisations and events, including Sydney Theatre Company, Bell Shakespeare, Belvoir St Theatre, Melbourne Theatre Company, Queensland Theatre Company, Lyric Opera Queensland, Opera Australia, Western Australian Opera, Adelaide Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth Festivals. His contribution to the Australian performing arts has been recognised with Helpmann awards, Australian Production Design Guild (APDG) awards and Green Room awards, to name a few.

    Michael Scott-Mitchell's interview describes his childhood and upbringing, his interest in architecture and his training at NIDA in design; early arts mentors Robin Lovejoy, John Bell and Ruth Cracknell; the designs he did for Sydney Theatre Company, Bell Shakespeare, operas such as The Ring , and the Sydney Olympics; his approach to design and the importance of collaborative teams; his analysis of some high profile designs including The Ring, large scale events for CHOGM, the Asian Games and the Vatican’s World Youth Day; his approach to particular operas and the differences in designing musicals; his enthusiasm for teaching and his opinions on design teaching here and overseas, especially in the last decade at NIDA.
