The Bentley Blockade was the culmination of three years of protest and campaigning which involved up to 7000 people from local communities. In 2013, a local farmer gave permission to the protesters to set up a camp on his land, 400 metres from the proposed mine site. The camp was permanently inhabited during the first quarter of 2014. When dawn broke on 31 March 2014, 2000 people were already at the camp as they had heard that a squad of 100 riot police were preparing to block access to the camp site and control access to the mine site. The NSW State Government suspended Metgasco's licence to drill for gas on 15 May 2014 due to insufficient community consultation.
