Peter Sheehan is a freelance illustrator, writer, designer and storyboard artist. He began drawing professionally in 1982, aged 19, when his first illustration was published in The School Magazine, and he has been a contributing illustrator for the magazine ever since. He has illustrated more than 25 children’s books and has won numerous awards including CBCA Honour Book Prize, APDG Award for Drawing, Stanley Award for Best General Illustrator and various film awards. He now works largely on storyboards for animation and films including Breath, The Sapphires and Beneath Hill 60. His artwork is held in the collections of Australian War Memorial and Australian National Maritime Museum.
The School Magazine is Australia’s longest running literary magazine and the oldest literary magazine for children anywhere in the world. Published by the NSW Department of Education, The School Magazine began in 1916 as a free publication for primary school children with the aim of presenting Australian writers for Australian children. Many well-known artists and writers have contributed to the magazine over time, including May Gibbs and Pamela Allen. Peter Sheehan has been a contributing illustrator for The School Magazine since 1982. This selection of School Magazine artwork represents the final two years of work before Sheehan moved largely into digital art production for the magazine. In this two year period he produced over 200 individual artworks to illustrated 75 stories for the magazine, including the popular serialised stories Marmalade and Korky Part 1 & 2, The Sun that Sleeps Part 1 & 2, and also a self-portrait of the artist.
