The Clifton Club in Bristol, originally named the Clifton Hotel and Assembly Rooms and constructed between 1806 and 1809, was designed by the convict architect Francis Greenway. In 1814 he arrived in Sydney on a 14-year sentence for forgery. A trained architect, he was issued with a ticket-of-leave and permitted to set up his own practice. By the following year he was advising Governor Macquarie on his public works. In 1816 he was appointed civil architect and assistant engineer. Examples of Greenway’s Georgian buildings still standing are Hyde Park Barracks, St James’ Church and St Matthew’s Church, Windsor. Other buildings for which Greenway was responsible for are Macquarie Lighthouse (which earned him a conditional pardon), the Government Stables (now the Conservatorium of Music), and the Supreme Court.

The text continues using a variety of fonts, to advertise the "Hotel, Cavern and Coffee House, for Gentlemen and Families, Clifton and Bristol posthorses and carriages".
