Material relating to Gillian Mear's award winning novel "Foal’s Bread" and “The Cat with the Coloured Tail”. Her award winning novel Foal’s Bread was published in 2011 by Allen & Unwin was the first published in 12 years.

The material features a large component based on her highly acclaimed novel Foal's Bread. It won several awards (Winner, Prime Minister's Literary Award for Fiction, 2012; Winner, ALS Gold Medal, 2012; Winner, 60th Annual Book Design Awards, Best Designed Literary Fiction, 2012; Winner, The Age Book of the Year Award Fiction, 2012; Winner, Victorian Premier's Literary Award for Fiction, 2012; Winner, Colin Roderick Award, 2012) and was short listed for several others.

The other component of the collection is based on her children’s book "The Cat with the Coloured Tail". The correspondence shows discussions with Allen & Unwin regarding selection of illustrators for the book and suitability to the Allen & Unwin children’s book profile.

It includes discussions with family, friends, publishers, fans and other writers often interspersed between drafts of the novel, published interviews, award nominations and short stories. Some of the short stories “Fairy Death” (previously titled `If I Could Kiss Hans Christian Anderson’) have been published in literary anthologies’ such as Heat, December 2010 and Best Australian Essays, 2011 and “Old Companhurst” for Meanjin, 2014.
