  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Jack Lindsay (1900-1990), son of Norman Lindsay, was born in Melbourne and brought up in Brisbane after his parents separated. In 1926 Lindsay travelled to London with John Kirtley and established Fanfrolico Press. It produced an impressive list of classics and literary curiosities, including Lindsay’s own Greek and Latin translations and other books illustrated by Norman. He supported himself by his prolific writing - poetry, drama, history, biography, fiction and drama.

  • Scope and Content
The 10 typed and handwritten letters with accompanying notes document Jack Lindsay's relationship with Edward Goldston (bookseller, publisher) and confirm details about the new press he was hoping to start with the backing of Harold Shaylor. They reveal the financial difficulties experienced by Jack and his de facto, Elza De Locre while living in Cornwall during the 1930’s.

The letters also reveal what books and journal articles (i.e. Deposing Venus, Daphnis and Chloe, In Revenge, Flat Dwellers, The Dagger for Two, Cresida, Lysistrata, Birth of Will, Last Days of Cleopatra, Umpires of Empire, The John Donne Biography) he worked on during this period, of which very few where actually published.
