Sir Wilhelm Ernst Hans Franz Heysen (1877-1968), was a noted Australian landscape artist. ‘He won the Wynne prize nine times between 1904 and 1932, the Crouch prize in 1931, and the Maude Vizard-Wholohan prize in 1957. He was knighted in 1959.’ Heysen was born on 8 October 1877 in Hamburg, Germany. As a child he migrated to South Australia in 1884 with his family. He developed a deep love of the Adelaide Hills, which remained a constant source of inspiration in his art work. He settled in the Hahndorf countryside in 1912 where he lived and worked for the rest of his life.
