  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

In 1858, Sydney photographer William Hetzer advertised that he was preparing ‘a novelty in the pictorial art, which he purposes to publish in its complete form as an album…a judicious selection of 36 stereoscopic views of Sydney – its Harbour, principal buildings, streets and neighbouring scenery..’. The following year he advertised the series had grown to 60 and included ‘pictures of nooks and corners of bush and rock scenery…’. Most of the Hetzer cards bear the stamp of bookseller J R Clarke, indicating that they were purchased there, rather than from the photographer. Clarke sold the work of many photographers, both amateur and professional, and even published them under his own imprint. In 1859, he displayed 18 stereoscopic photographs at the 'Photographic Conversatione' of the Philosophical Society of New South Wales. This collection has 11 stereoscopic photographs with the rare label ‘Views in Sydney and Neighbourhood. J. R. Clarke’.
