  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    George Ernest Morrison, 1862-1920, was an Australian doctor of medicine, traveller and journalist, who became the resident correspondent of The Times at Peking in 1897 and political adviser to the President of China (Yuan Shih-k'ai), 1912-1920. During his life he amassed a remarkable library of Western language works on China, comprising over 20,000 volumes, maps and pamphlets. The collection is now held by the Institute of Oriental Culture at the University of Tokyo.

    A letter written to the Editor of the Journal of the Royal Society of Arts from G. E. Morrison, stating his endeavour to form a collection of books and papers for a Chinese national collection and requesting a list of papers dealing with Asia, 23 February 1915
