    Robert William Willson was Catholic bishop of Hobart, 1842-1866. Concerned with the conditions of convicts, he visited Norfolk Island, which was then administered from Hobart, in 1846, 1849 and 1852. His comments on conditions there led to some improvement and helped to bring about the close of the penal settlement in 1856

    Letters from Bishop Willson, with drafts of replies by the Comptroller-General of Convicts, J. S. Hampton. Includes a long letter to Lieutenant-Governor Denison, 22 May 1852, detailing the despair of the men on Norfolk Island, the injustice and severity of their punishment and his suggestions for reform
