    James Coates, 1815-1854, was born in Jamaica and arrived in New Zealand in July 1841. He was shortly appointed sheriff and clerk to the Legislative Council. Later he was appointed chief clerk in the Colonial Secretary's Office, 1846, clerk to the Auckland Provincial Office, 1853 and clerk to the House of Representatives, 1854

    Edward Gibbon Wakefield, 1796-1862, promoter of schemes for systematic colonization and land disposal in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, visited Canada in 1838, 1841-42 and 1843-44 and was elected to the Canadian General Assembly in December 1842. He arrived in New Zealand as a colonist in February 1852 where he was elected to the first New Zealand General Assembly
