Extracts from letterbook no. 1 of the Police Magistrate, Somerset settlement 28 July 1869-1 October 1871. And letters from Henry Marjoribanks Chester to Queensland Colonial Secretary 17 January 1876 with enclosed report of D' Albertis expedition to Fly River December 1875, 31 December 1880 relating to Boigu Island natives; and from C. Pennefather to same and to P.M. Thursday Island 9 September 1881-31 October 1882 mainly reporting on a cruise of Q.G.S. Pearl undertaken to enforce the Pearl Shell and Beche de Mer Fisheries Act of 1881. Typescript copies made for Dr Chester

To the extracts of letterbook no. 1 is attached a manuscript pencil note stating that the original volume has since disappeared from Thursday island Courthouse which still has no. 2 volume concerning the years 1871-1877. Rev. W. H. MacFarlane (ML52/226) states that the original of one of the volumes (presumably no. 1) has since been destroyed.
